How to Determine Ring Size

Ring Sizing and Ordering Information

When selecting a ring size on OneLuckyWish.com, available ring size options will display on each product page and are typically women’s sizes 5 through 9, and men’s sizes 9 through 12, including half sizes for some rings.

You can measure your ring size using either string or, perhaps a more common item in your home, floss. Take one of these measurement tools and wrap it around the base of your finger, marking where the string or floss first overlaps with a pen. Then, line that up with a ruler and take down its length in millimeters.

For men, the most common sizes are 10 (19.8 mm), 10.5 (20.2 mm), and 11 (20.6 mm). With standard ring sizes, every half-size matches up to a 0.4 millimeter increment, starting with size 3 equaling 14 mm, size 3.5 equal to 14.4 mm, size 4 equal to 14.8 mm, and so on. Common ring sizes for women are 6 (16.5 mm), 6.5 (16.9 mm), and 7 (17.3 mm).

How to Determine Your Ring Size

Finding the right ring size is not as simple as taking a measurement. Things to consider that may impact your decision are; an active lifestyle, a warmer climate, aerobic activity, and even pregnancy. Also, as we age, our knuckles may tend to swell slightly, and for men, wider bands and rings tend to run smaller. After considering these factors, you may decide to order a half size larger to insure a proper fit.

Tips for Proper Ring Measurement

  • Verify that the printed Ring Sizer Guide matches the measurements on your ruler.
  • After cutting out the ring sizer, pull it tight for an accurate size - but do not stretch. You may need someone to help you to hold and read the measurement.
  • Measure your finger later in the day, when it is at its largest. Avoid measuring when your fingers are cold.
  • If you are using an existing ring and using the circle guides, make sure you measure using the inside diameter.

Sneakily Sizing a Ring for Someone Else

Buying a ring for someone else? If possible, try and borrow a ring they currently wear for the finger they’ll wear it on and use our printable Ring Size Chart and measure the inside diameter.

If you are trying to keep buying a ring a secret, for example if it's for an engagement or some special upcoming anniversary, my favorite way is to just go ring shopping as a fun weekend activity, or before or after dinner date. Just pop-in to a jewelry store next to your restaurant and you can both try on some rings just for fun.

You shouldn’t be jumping through hoops to secretly acquire your partner’s ring size. (Read: Please do not attempt to secretly measure their fingers in their sleep.) There are many other ways to go about this task, but subtlety is key.

Some people suggest sneaking into their jewelry box late at night and borrow a ring that you can measure. But, sneaking through someone's private things is rarely a good idea.

That being said, it’s completely acceptable to ask your partner downright for her ring size-just be vague as to the purpose of this request. Chances are that if you’re in a serious, committed relationship, she already suspects the proposal is coming soon anyway.
